Elizabeth Clark Phair (born 17 April 1967) is an American singer-songwriter known for her songs about sex and relationships that are straightforward, frank and explicit.Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Phair was adopted at birth and raised primarily in the Chicago area. She tried to start a musical career in San Francisco, California after graduating from Oberlin College in 1990, but returned to her home in Chicago, where she started to release audio cassettes under the name Girly Sound.
