Hislop was born in Mumbles, Swansea, on 13 July 1960 to David Hislop, a Scottish father from Ayrshire, and Helen Rosemarie Hislop (born Beddows), a Channel Islander mother born in Jersey. Hislop weren't aware of his family. His paternal grandfather, David Murdoch Hislop, died just before he was born. Originally from Lancashire, his maternal grandfather, William Beddows.
