Elizabeth Ruth Grable was born to Lillian Rose (Hofmann) and John Charles Grable, a stockbroker, in St. Louis, Missouri on 18 December 1916. She had ancestry in German, English, Irish and Holland. Her mother was a materialistic, ambitious woman determined to make her daughter a success.At the age of three Elizabeth, who later became Betty, was enrolled at Clark's Dance Academy. Betty learned ballet and tap dancing with her mum's encouragement. With the expectation of a stardom, Betty and her mother set out for Hollywood.Lillian lied about her daughter's age, and Betty (real age 13), in 1930 landed some small parts in film, including Whoopee! (1930), 1930 (1930), Happy Days (1929), and Let's Go Places (1930), Modern Movietone Follies. She had signed with RKO Radio Pictures in 1932 (real age 15). For the following three years, the bit-parts persisted.
